Food Project
For this project we studied the who, what, where, when, and hows of our current food system; who makes and controls our food, what is really in our food, where our food comes from, and where it goes. In addition, we also looked at when our current food culture and system came about and how the continues to grow. We then took one concept from our studies to focus on individually and wrote an essay about our perspective on this aspect of the food system. Along with this topic, we made an art piece to represent our thesis statement of our essay.
The eye of this image represents the possibilities and the already natural cycles that can keep our food system from a further downfall. In the iris of the eye is an image of a vertical farm that incorporates natural cycles with high scale production. It shows how realistic these natural possibilities are for our growing nation. The pesticide plane represents the industrial food system, which is destroying the already natural food system. If we used the raw cycles of life we could accomplish something beyond the current system. We could achieve environmental health, economic stability and social empowerment. |
Food Project Art Piece Reflection
I chose to use Photoshop because I was able to add an affect that couldn't have come acoss with any other medium. I wanted a very futuristic and somewhat unrealistic look and was able to accomplish this using Photoshop. Photoshop allowed me to show a very unique perspective. I was able to combine and edit two pictures that were very different to make them unified. I was able to add the vertical farm inside of the eye with several affects. I wouldn't have been able to do this without a program that allowed such applications to be made. Because I was able to use a program that let me edit and add effects, I was able to get across my perspective on the food system and use this art piece to explain my thesis through a futuristic and unique way. I used a couple different art elements and principles throughout my poster. I chose unity to show that both food systems are not that far away from eachother, meaning that both systems can work together and incorporate concepts from the other system with out harming the world and the people and animals that live on it. I used movement of the plane to show how the current industrial food system was in a way flying over the alternative farming methods and covering up the alternative trail. In the beginning I had a very unique idea of a small simple Rube Goldberg that exemplified the practices of alternative farmer Joel Salatin. I spent a couple days of my time planning and when it came time to make it, it didn't work. So then I had only a few days to make a new plan for a new project. I finally went with a short stop motion animation which I did complete. However, because I did it in such a short amount of time, I wasn't sure it was refined enough for an exhibition. Then I made a third project; a poster using Photoshop. If I were to do this project again I would first off choose a project I know I could accomplish and refine, and I wouldn't waste as much time planning in the beginning with a project I wasn't postive about. Overall though, I am proud of my final project and even my second project I was proud of. Saying that, I definetly would have made sure my plan and project were able to be executed in the amount of time I had. |

For this mini-project, we sketched an animal and added different live trace affects on Adobe Illustrator.

Stop Motion Animation Project
|
This project was incredibly challenging but rewarding as it was finally completed. In this project, we worked with a partner, taking a series of photos to create a stop motion animation, somewhat like a flip book. Then individually we used Adobe Flash to put it into a project with an intro and credits.

Lighting and Depth of Field Practice
Depth of Field: Your aperture (diaphragm of lens) controls what is in focus and what is not in focus.
Shallow Depth Of FieldThis is my shallow depth of field photo. A shallow depth of field photo is when the background is out of focus and the main object (being the man on the motorcycle) is in focus. The aperture is small as well.

Project ReflectionQ: What makes an engaging book cover?
A: To make a engaging book cover the artist's art work must catch the readers eye, making them want to read more. The title and image, if they choose to use a picture, must be intriguing and unique. The cover should also be simple, not cluttered or over done. It needs to have a balanced space. The artist should not use too many colors either. Using no more than three makes the cover less complicated and more professional. The cover should also set the mood, without giving away what their story is about straight up. Being mysterious can't hurt. This is shown through my own book cover in which I give the reader a window into my story world, but only so much that they would have to read it to know the full truth. Overall, in making an engaging book cover one should make sure to use the space wisely, remember in some cases less is more, and set the mood through their cover in an intriguing way. Q: How and why is art used as a vehicle for communication? A: Art is used as a vehicle through many different forms. Such forms include billboards, book covers, magazines, paintings, music, dance, writing, etc. It is used as a vehicle for communication to display a message, connection, feeling etc. The reason art is used and not just non-artistic paragraphs or words is because artists want their work to be desirable. The artwork appeals to and engages the viewer's senses, allowing them to connect the piece to a desire, memory, emotion, etc. Q: To what extent does a work of art depend on the viewer's point of view? A: The artwork an artist makes must first and foremost be original, unique and be personally connected to the artist. However, the viewer must also be intrigued and feel a connection to the piece and think it is beautiful. In order to get the artists message or feeling across they have to do it in a way that is understandable by the viewers and catches their eye. So one needs to mix what they feel is right, but also see it from the buyer or viewer's point of view and be able to establish that in there work as well. Overall, I think the viewer's point of view is just as important as the artist's point of view. |
Teacher Animal Poster Project
For this project we pasted either animal or human bodies onto a desired background and then added our teacher's faces onto those objects using Photoshop. In this project I chose to put, my teacher Jessica McCallum's face on the girl's body and her favorite poet Walt Whitman on the man's body.
